Finding time to slow down is definitely something that I struggle with. Even on the more relaxed days when I don't feel as if I've really accomplished anything, I still find myself rushing through the task at hand and distracted by the next item on my mental list, whether it be a sink full of dishes, a knitting project, or playtime with my little one. I find that no one really benefits from this. I feel harried, my projects don't receive the care that I'd like them to receive and Silas misses out on getting my full attention. Psychologist Karen Horneffer-Ginter addresses this prevalent mindset and problem in Full Cup, Thirsty Spirit: Nourishing the Soul When Life's Just Too Much (2012, Hay House Insights).
Through personal reflection, anecdotes from clients that she sees in her practice, and observation of those around her, Horneffer-Ginter identifies six ways that we can slow down and live more in the moment. These include such things as honoring our rhythms, finding balance, and fully inhabiting our days. She offers suggestions and lists of open-ended questions to help you find ways to incorporate these themes in your own life. There is nothing really new here, but these lessons remain valuable and deserve frequent repetition. Horneffer-Ginter's voice is friendly and inviting. She does a wonderful job of speaking to where you are at right now, especially if you are an individual who has been resisting simplicity.

The book sounds great - one of the things I recently read was how our children pick up on our "rushing" and being "hurried" - I'd be curious to read more! Thanks for the giveaway! Christina G
ReplyDeleteI love the IDEA of simplicity but the REALITY of it doesn't appeal to me quite so much. :)
